Cardboard Cutout Fallback Avatar Base

I am now proud to present my newest Blender creation, my cardboard cutout fallback avatar base! This base is intended to be used with VRChat as a custom fallback avatar, being uploaded for both Quest and PC.

ATTENTION!

This base requires the use of Blender to bake proper textures for it. While this may seem daunting, I have done my best to set up a blender file to be as easy to use as I could, with a written text guide on the exact steps you need to take which can be found inside the .zip file or the unity file. If there are any issues with the guide or it isn't as easy to follow as I had hoped, do let me know and I will do my best to add more detail where needed.

The Blender method will result in baked diffuse and normal textures which will allow the artwork to remain smooth where the surface of the cardboard is rough, to emulate it being a sticker or something printed onto the cardboard. If you would like to make it look more like the art is directly painted or drawn onto the cardboard, omit the custom normal and instead use the default blank one included with the project.

If you would like to forgo Blender altogether, you can also just put your image onto the blank base texture and use that as is. I have provided a template which shows the safe area for the image with the UV map, use that as a guide on how to scale or move your image to fit onto the front of the asset properly.

DETAILS

The downloads for this include a .zip file packed with various goodies, including the aforementioned Blender file for baking textures, written guides on the avatar and how to bake textures, blank base textures, a sizing template, and a Unity package file with a preset scene and everything. The files for Unity have an included scene you can switch to for easier editing. The avatar includes full visemes, though you can disable these if you would like. Additionally, since the visemes aren't really speaking or anything on this model you can swap the slots around as desired to produce different movements when speaking.

COMPLICATIONS

Due to the model being intended as merely a custom fallback/memey avatar asset, certain things may not work exactly as expected when actively using the avatar, especially in VR. The skeleton was created solely to satisfy the VRC SDK, and may or may not be properly proportioned. Also there are obviously no arms or anything so you'll be invisible in first person anyway. I cannot guarantee it's a perfect asset, but for its intended use case as a custom fallback that will display to users when your main selected avatar is blocked for performance, it works well. You are of course free to edit the model to your liking, as per my TOS.

TOS

You're allowed to do pretty much whatever you want with the asset aside from resell it or reupload the files. You can edit it, render it, animate with it, customize it, pretty much anything just as long as you have purchased the product and credit me+link to this gumroad page.
